Superheros!

Black Friday I taught the first Superhero Camp!  And I must say I had a BLAST! And I'm not completely sure but I think the boys enjoyed a it too!  We talked about our favorite Superheros and powers we would love to have!  Mine would be Teleportation!

We thought about what would our hero wear, what gadgets might he use and then designed a logo.  Batman has his Bat sign, Superman, his Super S symbol and our superheros got logos too printed on their very own cape!  We made stencils and screen printed them on red or blue capes.  I offered a T-shirt as well but who wouldn't want a cape?!?

We also started our own comic books staring our Superhero.  And I must say there were some intriguing and action packed stories!  At first it was tough coming up with a story line but once the capes dried and were put on the inspiration flowed!

I can't wait to hold the class again!  Rumor has it it will be offered again during Christmas break: One for younger Elementary and then one for upper Elementary students.  More details coming soon!

Happy Thanksgiving!

I hope all of you have a very wonderful Thanksgiving!  I can't wait to spend time with family, friends and of course eat some delicious food!  Most importantly be thankful for all I have.  I am Thankful for my family, friends, my cat, Misty, my job, and my students! I am so very blessed.

What are you thankful for?

Here are some pictures of Kindergarten projects.  Mrs. King asked if I could make some vests for there Thanksgiving feast.  We looked at Native American vests and symbols and then made our own!  I can see some great symbols on some of them!

Beginner Crochet Class

Join us this month for the first ever beginner crochet club!
This month we will be learning how to make a beautiful scarf perfect for the incoming cool weather.
I am so excited for this class!  It will be my first ever crochet class for school aged children, but after tackling the beginner crochet class I held over the summer, I am cool and collected.  No needles in this one, just hooks.  I think what I am looking forward to most is seeing the kids reactions when they finish their scarf and wear it for the first time.  There is something awesome about wearing something you made yourself and I hope to share that sense of accomplishment and inspiration that comes with making homemade in my beginner crocheters!  Beginner Crocheters....has quite a ring doesn't it?

St. Leo's: Mexico

The third and fourth graders are in Mexico this month! We took our imaginary plane and learned about some of the beautiful artwork made in this country.

4th grade learned about the beautiful weavings from the Mexico and Guatemalan border.  Did you know that you can tell where someone is from by looking at their traditional huiples (blouses)....they weave with colors and symbols that represent them.  Each students brainstormed what colors represent them and will be weaving three of them into their very own weaving!

3rd grade learned about the Huichol Indians and their beautiful yarn paintings.  These paintings tell stories of their culture, ancestors and gods through symbols and colors.  We are going to tell our own stories.  We just finished brainstorming symbols that represent ourselves and combined two of them into a wonderful design.  Next class we will be "painting" with yarn to bring them to life!

On critique day I promised I would wear my Mexican dress I have up in my room.  Isn't the embroidery beautiful!

St. Leo's: Lines and Colors

School is certainly in full swing and so are a variety of projects and artwork! I just wanted to share some past projects I just can't wait to hang up and add some color in the school.

This being my first year at lovely St. Leo's, so I've been trying to find out what the kids remember and know from year to year.  I also wanted to get them accustomed to how I run my classroom and the art material procedures.  Pre-2 reviewed or learned their different types of lines by creating a colorful oil pastel and watercolor resist! 1st and 2nd also learned a line song to help them remember horizontal and vertical lines.

Below is some form the 2nd grade class:

Pre-K and Kindergarten also reviewed colors and are practicing mixing our primary colors to make secondary colors.  As well as painting in the lines and following directions.  Next step Kindergarten is going to tackle scissors using their circles that are below:

The Artroom

Hello! My name is Miss Thrun and welcome to the art room!  I have just recently taken a job as a part time art teacher teaching Pre-K all the way to 8th grade!  I worked most of the weekend cleaning and organizing the space.  And then spent to few days before my first class brightening it up and moving on in.  Let me give you a little tour!

Below is the oh-so-important classroom rules.  They are nice and large for quick reference! I also created a little reading area which is going to be prefect for reading the books I use to start some of my lessons for the younger ones.

While decorating I've realized my lack of art posters and books! I can't wait to acquire some more posters and colorful additions, can use lots more art books and videos too!

To add some whimsy and color I make some yarn pom-pom garland to hang from the ceiling.  I must say its one of my favorite parts! I also glad for those giant pair of scissors I made during my student teaching.  I have plans to add to the collection with a pencil, paintbrush, along with others!  And then below is my attempt at a panoramic view.  What do you think of the classroom?
